Another example of this is Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s album “E.1999”. This contrast in typefaces shows the designer and the music artist’s attempt to emphasize the play on words that exist in the album’s title “Illmatic”. In the bottom left corner of the cover, “ill” is shown in white blackletter, while the rest of the title is in a less noticeable sans serif typeface. ![]() Nas’s name is shown as the largest typographical structure on the cover, in the top right corner and is emphasized using colour and blacklettering. The designer uses blackletters to highlight the most important aspects of the cover. One notable example of this would be Nas’s album “Illmatic”. Although blackletter is also known to be associated with old English, metal, and tattoos, it has a close connection to hip-hop as well. Blackletter is an ornate and condensed typeface that originated from early Western Europe. Rapper’s Delight is Hand drawn in a Graffiti-like style Paired with the background, which is a red brick wall, the viewer can easily discern that the purpose of the brush-like font is to represent the title and group as graffiti on a wall. The track cover showcases the title of the song as well as the name of the group in a brush-like typeface. For example, the Sugarhill Gang’s single, “Rapper’s Delight”, is one of the most prominent hip-hop tracks of its time, bringing mass mainstream attention to the relatively exclusive genre. This close relationship between graffiti and hip-hop is evident in many album covers of the golden age. In Diallo’s journal on the topic, he states, “ original link between graffiti and the hip hop movement, which results more from the intersection and aggregation of different forms of expression performed by youths from the same place” (David Diallo 14). ![]() Its popularity amongst young people and its affiliation with urban culture helped further strengthen this relationship. Graffiti also originated in New York City, around the same time period as hip-hop. Hip hop originated within New York City, in the Southern Bronx area around the late 1970s. Ever since hip-hop’s inception, it has always been closely associated with graffiti. This is a common misconception as the golden age of hip-hop emerged after the old school period ended in 1985, gaining massive mainstream success and ending around 1998. The focus of this page is on the golden age of hip-hop, which is also often referred to as “old school” today. Today, hip-hop branches out into many contrasting sub genres, from mumble rap to Christian hip-hop, showcasing a wide variety of messages from various parts of the world. ![]()
